Backyard Wildlife Revealed

Backyard Wildlife Revealed

I spend a lot of time in my yard, or at least a lot of time looking out the window at my yard – probably more than most people. But even so, there is so much time when I’m not able to observe the comings and goings of animals on my property. This is particularly true at night – when I’m asleep and many of our local mammals are more active. I can only watch for so much of the day, but a little bit of technology can help fill in the gaps. A recent gift of a game camera has provided new insights into the presence and behavior of our backyard wildlife.

For the first five weeks or so, I experimented with setting it up in various places around our yard. I was surprised and delighted to see how actively our property was used by a number of animals. I knew we had eastern cottontails but was unaware how many and how active they were in certain areas of the yard. With no delicious weeds or wildflowers growing in our front yard in the winter, I see them very seldom this time of year. But they’re clearly still here. It was also no surprise that there are gray squirrels in the yard – they’re a fairly constant presence on the property and were the most frequent animals to set off the camera.

But there were others I had been less aware of: a red fox that passed through once, a raccoon, and quite a bit of eastern coyote action. For me it was most interesting to learn the regular routes they took and where they entered and exited the yard. The video below provides a reel of photograph and video highlights from this first few weeks of testing my new camera in the yard.

After some very exciting test runs at home, I deployed the camera in a local conservation area to see what I could find in the “wild”. I didn’t get as much action, but did manage to locate a game trail that is at least occasionally used by coyotes. The video below shows a pretty amazing capture of a pair of coyotes. While collecting the SD card from the camera today, I also noticed fisher tracks nearby. Perhaps I’ll catch a glimpse of it soon.

  1. I really enjoyed watching your videos. I know that if I was still living stateside I would be purchasing one of these game cameras. Unfortunately, we live in a pretty developed neighborhood here in Germany so it would be pretty useless. I’d be interested to see how your traffic changes with the seasons.

    1. Hi Fred! Glad to hear you enjoyed what I’ve found so far. I’m also curious to see how things will change as we move into spring and summer. As for living in an area that’s “too developed” to see wildlife, there’s really no such thing. I don’t know anything about Germany specifically, but I know even major cities like Boston and New York City have really interesting wildlife, even as large as coyotes, that come out to explore at night when the city quiets down.

  2. Hi Carole! I’m glad you enjoyed the post. I don’t have a ton of experience with game/trail cameras yet, as this is my first one and I’ve only been using it for about two months. It’s a Rexing Digital Trail Camera H1. From what I understand, the biggest decision to make is whether you want to be able to see your photos/videos instantly (via a cell service) or if you want to go collect the SD card at the device. I didn’t want to pay for the cellular service, so I just go check mine once a week. An extra SD card and set of batteries mean I can swap everything out in one trip, which is nice.

  3. Hi Andrea! I can definitely see the appeal of multiple cameras. I currently have mine set up in a particular spot hoping to catch the emergence of coyote pups from a nearby den, but I’m constantly wishing I also had “eyes” elsewhere. As for connecting with others – I’m not sure if you noticed it, but check out the Upper Cape Naturalists Club link at the top of this website. I coordinate this local naturalists club that meets twice a month. Our Tuesday evening talks have gone virtual during COVID (historically we were in the Bourne Library), but we’re still doing outdoor walks on the weekends once a month (we have one coming up at Town Neck Beach in Sandwich this Saturday). Let me know if you’d be interested in being added to the club’s email list (which is separate from the blog sign-up).
